On the stupidity (or not) of the social sciences

Peter Boghossian (who seemingly fancies himself as some sort of nouveax libertarian Hitchens/Dawkins and manages to be as clueless and useless as both, rather than the legends they all think they are) has pulled off another hoax on the postmodernists along with a couple of his mates.

It is rather shooting fish in a barrel, get the pomo world salad generator lined up and away you go, and Boghossian has done this before.

What is interesting is the conclusions that are drawn. Mostly, along the lines of hahaha gotcha feminazis ! Red flag giveaways are phrases like “grievance studies” which serve to brush away actual and real discrimination suffered.

They don’t call for more reality-based research into social policy, inequity, patterns of abuse, nor for the need to set out parameters that can distinguish between whiny snowflake adolescents, abusers ( eg the transcult) and genuine experts and experience.

The concept of intersectionality for instance is hopelessly misunderstood, but these authors don’t want it understood, they want the baby well and truly thrown out with the bathwater. Same when they jeer at the idea of “rape culture” – it is undermining those who are doing serious research and in particular those wanting to understand women’s lives. Boggy and his fan club do not want that at all.

ETA: from the first hoax they pulled (pay to publish) they give away their hang-ups quite explicitly:

“Particularly, we suspected that gender studies is crippled academically by an overriding almost-religious belief that maleness is the root of all evil. On the evidence, our suspicion was justified.”

(Though ironic that gender studies actually shares their belief that maleness is the root of all knowledge, humanity and truth)
